I got swept up in the romance and definitely devoured this series
Plot
An agnostic sex podcaster and a newly single rabbi fall in love; they find out if their relationship survives their very different lives and meddling families. Originally titled “Shiksa,” which is also the last word spoken in the first episode.
I agree: the rabbi is hot
There was a lot of great writing, pacing, and acting; it was easy to fall in love. : ) However, I did feel a lingering discomfort with the portrayal of Jewish culture.
Some, however, were more disgusting, like the constant use of the term “shiksa,” which really isn’t a nice thing to say
Some inaccuracies were just annoying and jarring, like the Hanukkah menorahs that kept popping up everywhere (her parents’ front door, really?) or the massive wealth her first-generation immigrant parents had somehow amassed. If I were around people who used that term seriously to describe someone, I wouldn’t want to hang out with them again.
In the series, non-Jews are repeatedly singled out by their blondeness
To add insult to injury, the first time the word is used, it is projected with contempt at a stranger simply because of her appearance. As a blonde Jewish woman, I’m familiar with this kind of “but you don’t look Jewish” ignorance, but it doesn’t come from the Jewish community.
I’d love to see this improved in a second season!
At best, these jarring elements seemed poorly researched; at worst, they seemed pandering and reliant on outdated racial stereotypes.
