This “Merson” trumpet mouthpiece got my attention for looking like a heavyweight Olds copy. Turns out that was probably intended!The scans made show this is similar to various Olds 3 trumpet & cornet mouthpiece designs, as well as something between a Vintage Bach 7D and 7DW. The piece is comfortable but doesn’t have an overly wide rim, and it’s shallow enough to give a bit more upper register support and brightness than your average 7C. The added mass dampens its response, and the throat/backbore aren’t overly open – it’s not stuffy, but not especially free-blowing. It could probably stand to have those enlarged slightly. Overall this is in good shape, with various nicks and some light scratches. The rim and cup are in good playing shape, and the shank opening is round. It’s ready to play! Merson was a music distribution firm, and Michael Wright wrote a great overview article on Vintage Guitar. Apparently, Bernie Mersky founded Merson in New York City around the 1940s, when they were marketing archtop guitars and amplifiers. They came on the scene with an ad in the December 1948 issue of Music Trades. “No information beyond this debut is available. It’s also probable the Merson ‘Tempo’ name was applied to other acoustic guitars. Merson instruments from this period do not appear to have been widely distributed, so they are probably a regional phenomenon, although they did get notice in The Music Trades, a major trade publication. Other instruments distributed by Merson in 1948 included Harmony, Kamico, Favilla, Tempo and Supro electric guitars and stringed instruments; Covella, Fontanella and Galanti accordions; Tempo Bandmaster, Merson, Merson Ultratone, and Rudy Muck brass instruments; Kohlert, [Thibouville Freres], Penzel-Mueller, Barklee, and Merson woodwinds…Merson emerges again as an importer in the late ’50s and early ’60s (as the guitar boom was building), marketing Giannini acoustic guitars made in Brazil and Hagstrom electric guitars made in Sweden.” – emphasis on Rudy Muck (then a Carl Fischer brand) is mine! That may have been a conduit through which brasswinds were imported from Europe, and French-made “Tempo Bandmaster” trumpets exist as well. Kohlert had been expelled from Graslitz, Bohemia [Czechoslovakia], after its firm there was merged into Amati-Kraslice. Considering Böhm-Meinl made Olds-esque trumpets for York/Rudy Muck/Carl Fischer with the distinctive exposed-spring/notched valve guide, this may have been paired with an Olds-esque Merson or Ultratone trumpet. The Muck 5M and Academy brands both appear on Böhm-Meinl Olds-esque stencil trumpets.The “Germany” stamp actually gives us an idea when this was made – probably prior to 1974. Early post-war German goods were marked with the zone of occupation; Germany was still a country under Allied administration. This is why you see goods [musical instruments] marked “US Zone Germany” or “Germany, USSR-occupied”. The former is seen on late 1940s Böhm-Meinl stencils like “Revere”, and the latter on instruments from the Vogtland in Saxony, from shops that eventually produced B&S and Weltklang. After the two German states were established in 1949, both states laid claim to the entirety of Germany, with the other half being either the “Soviet Zone” or “Western Zone” and considered illegitimate. The West/FRG made this official as the Hallstein Doctrine for representation abroad, though the East/GDR eventually softened their analogous version. Some cross-border trade occurred, and many early Böhm-Meinl instruments have valves or parts identical to Markneukirchen-made stencils, including the “Made in Germany” stamp on the mouthpiece receiver identical to some 1940s Amatis also made in Markneukirchen [Max Keilwerth was retained as a go-between to outsource production so Amati could fill early quotas]. Eastern parts and compatible designs appear for years afterward, as many of the Bavarian-based instrument makers had ties to instrument makers in the East.Goods produced in both states often continued to be marked “Made in Germany” irrespective of what government was in charge of that territory – technically, it was true. Western chancellor Willy Brandt and Ostpolitik ended this policy, and in 1973, the West/Federal German court ruled that the FRG couldn’t lay claim to “Made in Germany” exclusively, meaning East Germany also shouldn’t use it to hide the true origin of their products, reinforcing the reason to distinguish between West and East.
