An interesting topographical drawing of a view towards the Hotel Piccola Sentinella at Casamicciola on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples. The building was entirely destroyed by the island’s devastating earthquake in 1883. Details Signed: No. Inscribed: Inscribed lower right. Dated: Dated lower right. Height (cm): 18.5 Width (cm): 25.6 Height (inches): 7.28 Width (inches): 10.08 Condition: Overall in good condition for its age.Some minor age toning as shown, particularly around the periphery of the sheet. Stock Number: KA-965 Stock Number: KA-965 –> All artworks come with a Certificate of Authenticity and—if it is a collection artwork—its accompanying collection text or artist biography. This picture forms part of a superb group of works that were collected by a British Grand Tour traveller in Naples in the mid-19th century. The collection includes impressive Neapolitan School gouache vedute depicting iconic local sites, and also meticulous renderings of the decorative frescoes at Pompeii. There are also a number of hand-coloured lithographs by Gaetano Dura, who specialised in popular prints describing the every-day life of Naples. In addition to works by local artists, the collection features a small number of topographical pictures by British hands. Naples and Pompeii were often the southerly apotheosis of a European Grand Tour—it being relatively easy to arrange transport on a British ship back to England from Naples. The events at Pompeii and the smoking silhouette of Vesuvius that dominated the Bay of Naples were a unique draw for the traveller and the Romantic imagination. In contrast to the civic sites at Rome—all testaments to imperial power—the monuments at Pompeii were testaments to everyday life and the volcanic power of Vesuvius inspired personal awe and horror. The resulting experience for the traveller was therefore one of heightened authenticity and emotion. Such an experience warranted unique mementoes, and souvenirs were voraciously collected by the Victorian traveller. Pictorial representations of the key sites painted by local artists, to be taken home and shared with others, served as concrete reminders of this emotional engagement. Somerset & Wood was founded in 2015 near Bath, UK in the beautiful Cotswold market town of Bradford on Avon. Today the Gallery is run by founding owners Ayumi Ellingham and Olivia Nicholls. The Somerset & Wood project grew out of a desire to share our interests in art, history and design, and to champion the sometimes underrated field of British drawings and watercolours. We bring to the project combined professional arts backgrounds, in museums & galleries, art dealership and illustration. After completing a first class MA in English at the University of Cambridge and an MSc in History of Art with distinction at the University of Edinburgh, our Art Historian, Olivia Nicholls, worked for many years at the National Galleries of Scotland, and subsequently as an independent editor and art historian. Our focus is affordable original British works on paper of the 19th and early 20th centuries–principally in watercolour, ink and graphite. Although our stock is antique, our gallery is exclusively online and provides an inclusive contemporary shopping experience, eschewing the often intimidating environment of more traditional galleries. With over 2,500 artworks in stock, priced from under £50 to over £1,000, Somerset & Wood is a rich storehouse of 19th- and early 20th-century visual culture.
