MADE FROM THE ICONIC NEW ENGLAND TREASURE TROVE COLLECTIONRARE W CROWN R MARKED (1830-37 PERIOD) MINTY UNSHARPENEDUNCARRIED SCULPTURED & CARVED RARE LARGE WHITTLER PATTERNEXHIBITION QUALITY SHEFFIELD FOLDING DIRK SELF DEFENSE WEAPONby THOMAS MARSH / SHEFFIELD ~ 1 OF 2 MADE IN THIS PATTERN IDENTICAL TO THE NEW ENGLAND TREASURE TROVE EXHIBITION DIRK PUBLISHED IN THE SHEFFIELD EXHIBITION KNIFE BOOK PG. 196 Large Size Whittler 3 bladed 1830’s Sheffield folding dirks are extremely rare and have always been considered the top of the line and crème` de la crème` of all Antique folding dirks. Add sculptured and carved scales, W crown R marked blades, a Premier Maker, minty condition, and Provenance; and you have an Iconic piece. The moniker Whittler is a misnomer, as the name was assigned to this pattern much later, as these knives were not made for whittling. These early folding dirk knives were created to be used as self-defense weapons. They are the Gentleman’s counterpart to the fixed blade Bowie / Dirk knife; but are many times rarer than their fixed blade counterparts. They fall into the category of early edged weapons made for personal self-defense purposes; and thus, have the accompanying Mano-a-Mano romance and history associated with this early 1830’s period of American history. This is the largest size of the early and rare Whittler Pattern Sheffield folding dirk self-defense weapons in unsharpened, uncarried, minty condition from the famous New England Treasure Trove; a collection of Exhibition Quality knives that were custom made to order and put on display boards in Sheffield, Old England in 1836. The display boards were rediscovered in 1996 with all the knives being intact, just as they were put up in 1836! The N.E.T.T. adventure has yet to be published, but will go down as one of the all-time Iconic knife stories. In the 1830’s, all folding dirks and almost all fixed blade Dirks, daggers and Bowies were imported, almost exclusively from Sheffield, Old England, for the burgeoning American Market. This piece was intended for a well-to-do gentleman of means to use as a self-defense primary or back up weapon. During the 1830’s there was little law and order, and it was “every man for himself”. Men were often at risk of being waylaid by thugs, ner’ do goods, thieves, robbers, and bandits; and typically carried a cap and ball percussion pistol for self-protection. These early folding dirk knives were made primarily as a self-defense weapon for personal protection, and were completely hand forged, hand ground, hand fitted and hand polished using only the simple hand tools. The American revolver was not invented until 1836 by Samuel Colt. This Patterson model revolver and was prohibitively expensive at the time, and revolvers were not in general use in American until the Colt Baby Dragoon pocket model was introduced in 1848; followed shortly by the very popular Model 1849 that made American revolvers affordable. Pre-1850 Gentlemen would usually carry a of single shot percussion pistols (or brace 2 pistols), which were prone to misfiring. Thus, gentlemen would also typically carry a folding dirk knife in their pocket or vest, or sometimes a less expensive fixed blade dirk or a Bowie knife as a side arm on their belt as a backup self-defense weapon. This rare Sheffield early 19th Century Folding Dirk weapon is by the scarce, early, and quality cutlers Thomas & William Marsh. There is another better-known Maker with the same name, James Marsh (1780 -1817) who later became Marsh & Sheppard (1817-1825), then Marshes & Sheppard in 1825. It is probable that all the Marshes were somehow related, as Cutlery manufacturing was practiced by many generations of the same Cutlery families. Not much is known about Thomas and William Marsh who were early Old English Makers. They were located in Darnhall, near Sheffield, from 1787 – 1830, and both had different touch marks that were used before around 1818 when die reducing technology allowed smaller die stamps for hot stampings. In 1830 – 1837 they were located on Cricket Inn Road in Sheffield; but there is no record of the firm after 1837. The W & T Marsh company was a Manufacturer of Bowie type knives among other kinds of cutlery. Some of their Exhibition Folding Dirks are the best-known examples of exquisite, completely handmade Sheffield Exhibition Quality Folding Dirks Extant. Three of these Marsh folding dirks are showcased in the Sheffield Exhibition Knife Book, with slight variations in their hot stamp ricasso markings. On page 198 – 199 is a large Lock back Whittler pattern in carved pearl with the Master blade hot stamped, “T. MARSH”, “SPLENDID”, “CUTLERY” in 3 lines, with a Crown symbol above. The S.E.K. book has several errors, but note that this mark is absolutely pre-1837, not 1840’s-50’s; and is demonstrated in two other examples in this book by the same Maker but with the W crown R period (1830 -1837) mark. Pages 192-193 show another 1830-37 period carved pearl large Whittler pattern with the double stamped marking, “W crown R”, “MARSH”, “ELEGANT”, and “CUTLERY”: a slight mark variation by Thomas Marsh. Another 1830-37 example is shown on page 196, marked, “W crown R”, “MARSH”, “ELEGANT”, “CUTLERY”. Not that he Crown mark appears both with and without the W R letters that were utilized by some Makers to suggest the firm had a Royal Warrant; and is called a Regency mark. The W stood for King William, and the R stood for Regency. However, only 3 Sheffield Cutlery firms were granted Warrants to make cutlery for the Royal family. Note that the words, Elegant, Splendid, Superior, etc. were all descriptive monikers used almost exclusively by Makers in the 1830’s.This large, rare & minty folding Sheffield dirk weapon is from the collection of N.E.T.T. dirks that includes the best-known dirks extant, with some being published in the Sheffield Exhibition Knife Book. Many of the knives in the Sheffield Exhibition Knife Book came from two historical and Iconic lifetime collections; one collection of Antique mint IXL knives and another collection of mint Joseph Rodgers knives, along with a few other notable Mint Exhibition knives that were added to the book, such as the extraordinary N.E.T.T knives. These cutlery Master showpieces were first presented at The Blade Show in Atlanta, in June 1998 in a Sheffield Exposition Knife Seminar in conjunction with the Blade Show in an 8-page presentation handout highlighting some of the Iconic knives on display that were destined to be illustrated in the S.E.K.B. and was published the following year in 1999. Some of these knives were offered for sale by Old World Trading Co.; and these Exhibition knives were listed in the Old-World Trading Co. Presentation of Sheffield Exhibition Knives. This rare soft bound Inventory copy of these select Sheffield Exhibition Knives with pricing is dated 6-10-98, and only a handful exist. Page 6 begins the listing of Whittler pattern knives offered for sale, and this exact knife was displayed, offered for sale, and is listed on page 7 under Whittlers; W8 Marsh – 5 3/8” – Scalloped with the notation NO to the right, meaning this knife did not have an inventory # of the knives to be published, and is priced at $8,500; the fair market value for an 1830–37 unsharpened, uncarried, sculptured and carved rare Whittler pattern Exhibition Sheffield dirk from the N.E.T.T. collection in1998. However, just above this line item is W7 Marsh – 5 3/8” Scalloped – with the number #55, which was priced at $9,500. These two knives are absolutely identical in every respect, (save the back, non-display side) which is one of the idiosyncrasies of the N.E.T.T. Sheffield Exhibition Folding Dirks. In the N.E.T.T. collection, there were a few of the knife patterns that were made in duplicates, i.e., 2 identical knives that were displayed as a “mirror” image on the knives on the display boards of knives that were affixed to the boards in 1836 and became known as the New England Treasure Trove after they were re-discovered intact in 1996. Three of the Spectacular Exhibition Sheffield Folding Dirks are illustrated in the Sheffield Knife book, pages 192-193, page 196, and pages 198-199. The W7 #55 Dirk is illustrated on page 196 of the Sheffield Exhibition knife book, and note it has a couple of spots of naturally occurring spidering on the blade front. This knife is the exact twin of the knife on page 196, save for one naturally occurring characteristic known to most antique natural materials detailed below. Note that this Exhibition dirk as well as its twin published in the S.E.K.B., are Bolsterless, i.e., there are no solid metal bolsters at each end to secure the Master and secondary pivot pins for the 3 blades. These knives were never intended for use, and were show pieces for Exhibitions, Display and to compete in Cutlery competitions for gold and silver medals. This bolsterless design was favored by Master Cutlers who were “showing off” their cutlery skills, demonstrating that they could produce Exhibition knives without bolsters with Master Cutlers who could temper the springs and grind the fit for the proper blade/spring tension for the pins, and a Master Fitter who could set the pins, make the knife blades open and snap properly, without cracking the richly carved and sculptured expensive one-piece scales. Note this large size dirk has only 3 rivets holding the knife together. This dirk is 5 3/8” long closed with scalloped and 3 dimensionally sculptured one-piece scales carved with scroll pattern borders, with naturally occurring light to medium cream coloration. These scalloped and carved scales are found almost exclusively on 1830’s knives. Carvers of pearl and other materials were highly skilled Artisans, and there was limited market for their skills. After the 1830’s this style of Exhibition quality carving declined due to the high cost and shrinking market. The 3 pins and rectangular escutcheon plate are German silver, and the vacant name panel is overlaid and affixed with 2 tiny pins. This mid 1830’s style was soon replaced by escutcheons that were inlaid with a parser or bow fiddle tool. Most Sheffield Folding Dirks from this early 1830’s period used the centuries old traditional back spring design, and this dirk uses 2 traditional back springs. Lock back designs were just beginning to emerge, but soon become a standard pattern. This style, shape and large size of this Whittler pattern Dirk is only found in 1830’s Sheffield Exhibition quality Folding Dirks. Overall, it is 11 1/2″ long open, with a dagger style 4 1/2″ long dagger shaped dirk blade with a median ridge ground down the middle of the single edged blade. Weight is 2.4 ounces or 68 grams; yet is a deadly self-defense weapon. The Master Blade ricasso is hot stamped “W crown R”, “T. MARSH”, “Elegant” and “Cutlery”, in 4 lines; and dates the knife to the 1830–1837 period. It is extremely rare to find an 1830’s blade that has not been sharpened or carried. It is exceptionally rare to see an 1830’s blade with all of the orginal crocus of Iron polish, especially for blade with the W crown R stamping. Note that only about 10% of knives from this period actually have the W crown R hot stamp mark. It also noteworthy that generally speaking, an 1830’s knife is 10 times rarer than an 1840’s blade, as all knives were a utilitarian object made for use and would typically have lived a long hard life in the 10 years prior to an 1840’s knife. Thus, knives from this period with mint blades are almost nonexistent; with the exception of Exhibition knives such as those from the New England Treasure Trove. It is understood that collectors have to make allowances for naturally aging and spidering for any Antique knife that is 100+ years old; much less going on 200 years old. This blade has no edge nicks, a full tip, ALL of the signature Sheffield crocus of Iron polish, and just a few naturally occurring small, scattered age spots and noticeably very light spidering that can be seen with a jeweler’s loupe. The 2 smaller 2” pen blade and 1 15/16” coping blade at the opposite end are also hot stamped, “W crown R” and “T. MARSH” in two lines. The coping blade is mint with one small patch of naturally occurring spidering near the tip on one side. The smaller 1 15/16″ long quill blade would be used by Gentlemen for opening envelopes, cutting string, or sharpening a Goose quill that was then dipped into an ink well for writing or affixing one’s signature to a document. Although metal dip pens came into use in the 1830’s, quill knives were still a fashionable accessory, and continued to be used for decades. Only a learned Gentleman who knew how to read and write during this period and would have the need and the means to afford a self-defense weapon with a quill bladed knife like this one. The pen blade is mint with extremely light scattered minuscule spots that are almost invisible to see without magnification. All blades snap properly as new. When closing the blades, the Master blade should be closed first, followed by the 2 smaller blades. It is unnecessary to actually snap these blades as they could bottom out in the liner or hit or rub against the other blades and cause damage or rub marks. Just ease the blades back into the hilt. The small end of the dirk’s back spring has a long-scalloped brass liner insert halfway from the end, en suite with the liners, to separate the springs for each of the 2 smaller blades. This resembles very early back springs on Whittler patterns that were actually split at one end for the 2 smaller blades. This configuration has two back springs. The master blade uses both back springs as a Master blade back spring, and the opposite ends of these springs are tempered differently for the correct amount of tension for the 2 smaller blades. The liners are on the outside of the blades, with no liner separating the blades inside the liners as seen in the top view. The partial liner is to create a gap between the 2 backs prings at the small end and is visible only from the back spring view. The top centers of the scalloped brass liners are milled. All of the N.E.T.T. carved and scalloped Mother of pearl dirks have pristine mint scales, with no chips or cracks. However, as expected, some of the large size Minty dirks in the New England Treasure Trove that have cream colored, more porous scales that have naturally dried and shrunken a minuscule amount over almost 2 centuries. Combined with the constant stress of the pins from the strong back springs over time have understandably resulted in a few of the dirks having pin cracks; and a few have small pieces of the natural scale material that have popped off after the crack weakened the scale. Remember, the blades and overall condition of these knives remain in minty condition; proof that the display boards were put up and properly stored for nearly 200 years. One must consider many factors in describing the condition of this 1 of 2 made 1830’s N.E.T.T. dirk pattern that is in minty condition. When you add 2 large back springs of pressure with 3 blades on 2 pivot pins with no supporting end bolsters in a large Whittler pattern with one-piece scales; and combine their extreme 184 to 191 years of natural scale shrinking combined with constant strong spring pressure on the pins; having a hairline pin crack or a small piece on the back, non-display side popped off while still on the original 1836 display board are a result of normal and naturally occurring shrinking and moisture loss in the material from aging over time; and is understood as unavoidable and accepted as a naturally occurring event. The blades on this dirk are mint with the expected naturally occurring spidering that takes a century to form, the blades snap, and the dirk displays like its exact duplicate in the Sheffield Exhibition Knife Book, and the dirk remains in minty condition with an asterisk* denoting the naturally occurring aging of the scale and pin pressure causing a hairline pin crack on the front side and on the obverse, non-display side having a pin crack that separated and popped off the small end piece. Although this could be restored with a small piece matching the front, in my opinion, nothing should be done regarding the small reverse side missing end piece as this dirk is nearly 200 years old and otherwise, remains in mint, untouched condition, and displays well. One such N.E.T.T. dirk had a dentist prepare color matching piece to restore an end piece that popped off. Thus, pin cracks that create a small piece to pop off of this otherwise mint Exhibition quality 1830-37 marked dirk are unavoidable, naturally occurring, and of small consequence to the overall age, rarity, condition, eye appeal and overall presentation; especially when they occur on the back, non-display side. Like they say; go find another one. This Early Sheffield Folding Lock back Dirk knife is by a very rare Maker that went out of business in 1837. This Exhibition dirk would be the centerpiece any high-end knife, dirk, dagger, Folder, Bowie, edged weapon, Mexican American War, Civil War, gambling, Old West, Western Americana, or Military Officer’s accouterments collection. Many collectors have never seen a W crown R marked Sheffield folding dirk, much less had an opportunity to own an eye popping, early, rare, scalloped, and carved Exhibition pre-1837 handsome minty self-defense weapon. Bill Williamson, the Well Known “Grandfather” of Bowie knife collecting, wrote that in the burgeoning United States of the 1830’s, 95% of all early knives imported into America were from Sheffield. Given this Sheffield / American connection, the heritage and legacy of these handmade folding dirk weapons that are many times rarer and more desirable than their fixed blade counterparts, this was and remains a piece for a Connoisseur collector and investor, Provenance: This piece was first obtained by the late, great Iconic Knife Dealer Jim Taylor (& wife Cindy), who was originally from Sheffield, England, in 1998; and was on one of the original display boards from the Iconic New England Treasure Trove display boards that were created in 1836 in Sheffield and discovered intact in 1998! This exact knife is shown on a half-page listing on page 126, lot #1098 from the Don Littman’s collection of Edged Weapons, Bowie Knives, Folding Knives that were auctioned in the Greg Martin Fine and Collectible Arms, Sporting Guns and Knives Auction in San Francisco, California on November 18th, 2008. The $10,000 – $12,000 USD pre-sale estimate, plus 15% Buyers Premium ($1,500 – $1,800), plus 8.5% Sales tax ($850 – $1,020) = $12,350 – $14,820 USD Total 2008 Presale Estimate cost, plus travel expenses. Today, this Total Presale Estimate amount would be $15,660 – $18,792 in 2021 U.S. Dollars.
